Thank you LORD for toys and games
And messy rooms abounding
Thank you LORD for unmade beds
And children's noise resounding.
For socks and shoes and lego towers
And markers without caps
For broken crayons and grapejuice stains
And mid chaotic naps
For coats and hats and mitten trails
Across the basement floor
For sticky messes in thier hair
And handprints on the door.
I watched a tv news broadcast
When Oklahoma suffered dearly
When children were still missing
And thier lives reflected clearly
In the messy rooms they left behind
clothes scattered on the beds
Pillows crumpled where they lay
After cradeling thier heads
And I realizes that the sources
Of the messes we lament
Are so much more important
Than the clutter we resent
Sometimes I get so caught up
In my need to have things neat
That I forget to thank the LORD
For those little muddy feet
For someday in the future
Not so very far away
I'll sit in my neat clean house
and think about the day
When children's voices filled the air
And kid's stuff covered floors
And I will miss their time with us,
The height marks on the door,
And all the things that go along
with having kids around.
So thank you LORD for all the mess
And the elevated sound.
For I will miss them when thier grown
And long to have them near
And I will long for times ahead
When grandkids will appear.
